Yosemite again in the cold winter. I am reliably informed that the unusual rock shapes, cracks and staining is due to a process of 'exfoliation'.

This might get developed further as i wrestle with the idea of adding foreground fir trees...

Watercolours on 300gsm paper. Not so much call for a range of techniques here but painted with a flat-head brush and some salt...

Using salt? I have never heard of that before (which, by the way, isn't all that surprising). What does it do?

This is so beautiful. Takes me back...to May. haha I didn't go very long ago, but it was my first time, there was still plenty of snow, and the geology there was so amazing. There is just so much to see, and even in just one little scene, you've captured that idea amazingly!

I only discovered salt last year, you sprinkle grains on (sea salt is great) sparingly and the water and colour gets sort of 'pushed out' from the centre of the grain, giving you a splotchy irregular pattern to your colour. A lot of people use it for rocks and foliage in trees if they are doing layers.
It's most evident in the bottom right corner of the painting I did: [link]

Ah, that's a really neat effect! I'm going to have to try it sometime, if I ever dare to venture to watercolour again.

I must!
I'm just so new to them, I'm intimidatingly far from being any good yet. I'll get there!
